Sept 17 Devotion: The Danger of Drifting

Hebrews 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.

Galatians 5:7 Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?

         The warning here about letting things slip can be illustrated this way. Consider that you are sitting in a small boat and you have dropped your anchor so the boat will remain where you want it. Then, something happens that dislodges the anchor and you begin to slowly drift away from where you were. The movement may be so slight that you do not realize it is happening until suddenly you see that you are a long way from where you started. That is the idea of letting things “slip”. We must remain diligent and cautious. We can’t simply assume that everything is alright and that the anchor is still in place. Think of it this way. The devil wants to dislodge your anchor. If you are saved, he cannot change that, but he can dislodge your standards, your testimony, your commitment, your steadfastness. He will use every opportunity to move you from where you should be.

         There was a time when we “did run well”, but we allowed the devil to dislodge our anchor and now, we have drifted from the place where we do not “obey the truth” like we once did. We became lax and opinionated instead of being “stedfast, unmoveable”. (1 Corinthians 15:58) Instead of being “sober” and “vigilant”, (1 Peter 5:8) we became careless and deceived. We allow circumstances to dictate our actions rather than biblical principles. (This is situation ethics and it is a trick of the devil.) We slipped away slowly. We have been hindered. As the songwriter put it. “We’ve drifted too far from the shore.” Let us wake up to where we are. (We can do that by listening to the Holy Ghost.) Once we realize our drift, let us cry out in repentance and ask the Lord to get us back to the place where we were when we started, when we were so much closer to him.
