Sept. 19 Devotion: Sufficed

Sufficed

Ruth 2:14

And Boaz said unto her, At mealtime come thou hither, and eat of the bread, and dip thy morsel in the vinegar. And she sat beside the reapers: and he reached her parched corn, and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left.

As Bro. Parker went through the book of Ruth during revival, and particularly this verse, something stood out to me a bit. That word sufficed. It’s easily discerned that suffice means enough, adequate, etc. Think for a moment about Ruth’s situation. Ruth and Naomi had nothing. Naomi says in chapter 1 that she had left full, but has returned empty. They had nothing. Yet Ruth was able to gather up enough that they both were sufficed.

Ruth 2:18

And she took it up, and went into the city: and her mother in law saw what she had gleaned: and she brought forth, and gave to her that she had reserved after she was sufficed.

They had gotten all the nourishment they needed. We know the story how Boaz then takes Ruth in and how Ruth is now in the lineage of Christ.

The question today though is this: Why aren’t we sufficed? We live in a world with so much at our fingertips, yet we still seem to always want more. We reached a point for most households to survive it takes 2 incomes. Yes, things are more expensive, but some of that too is that we want more things so we have to make more. Now, there is truly nothing wrong with wanting more. The problem is we seem to be sufficed or satisfied with where we are with God and not the things of the world, even things that aren’t sinful. Why don’t we want more God just the same? If our favorite football team goes into OT in a game then great! We get to watch them more. What if the preacher preaches a little longer than normal? Is it: great, more time at church! Or is it: doesn’t he realize what time it is?

I’m not saying it’s bad to want more things in this world. We all like “stuff”. We all like to have things that we enjoy and might make our lives easier. However, what if we became satisfied in more of that stuff and instead truly desired more of God in our lives? I’d challenge you to ask yourself these questions honestly. When church dismissed at the end of revival last week:

Were you bummed it didn’t get extended?

Were you ready for a break?

Did it not really matter to you?

Your answer might show what area of your life you’re more sufficed in.

God bless,

Bro. Josh Richardson
