They Say
Matthew 23:1-7
Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, [2] Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: [3] All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. [4] For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. [5] But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, [6] And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, [7] And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
In our text the scribes and pharisees are describing their opinion of salvation. They say that it's by good works and fancy garments and church attendance, but Jesus has another opinion about the plan of salvation. He instructs his apostles not to do as they do. Good works and modest apparel and being faithful to church is a great thing. The difference between the reason of doing these things: We are not doing what we do to be seen of men. Our desire is to represent the Lord the best way we can. God is not interested in our opinion, but in our willingness to be obedient to him as our Lord and Saviour. Remember they bind heavy burdens, but Jesus said come unto me all ye that are heavy laden and I will give you rest. They say by the keeping of rules this will reveal your relationship to the Lord. Jesus said come unto me and I will give you life. We are not saved by the keeping of some law. We are saved by grace and in trusting in the shed blood of Jesus Christ on the cross of calvary
