Oct. 30 Devotion: Count Your Blessings
Count Your Blessings
Psalm 103:2
Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:
We know the hymn “Count Your Blessings.” We’ve heard it said that if you are ever down, just start writing down all that God has done, and that will brighten your mood. Will it serve as a good reminder? Absolutely! Will it just immediately brighten your mood? That’s debatable.
Sometimes life comes at us fast and hard. We can feel like it’s just one bad day after another, or one bad event followed by something worse. That makes it very difficult to just “flip a switch,” per se.
I believe too many times we also can fall into the trap of being thankful for the same things over and over, and we tend to overlook just all that God has blessed us with. Look what David says here in Psalm 40:
Psalm 40:5
Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
Think about what David is saying here. God's wonderful works are so numerous that David couldn't even begin to count them all. Yet how often do we find ourselves focusing on the handful of things going wrong rather than the countless things God has done in our lives? We may not be able to count every blessing, but we certainly shouldn't stop trying.
Yes, life can be supremely difficult at times. Yes, we can feel like it’s always a struggle. However, no matter what storm we are in, no matter how long we’ve been in it, we’ve still got plenty to be thankful for!
I encourage you today, and for the next few days, to write down some of your blessings from God. Write them down so you don’t repeat anything. Add a few each day and see how far you can get. Maybe it will help you to remember that even through whatever you’re facing, we still serve a wonderful Savior!!
God bless,
Bro. Josh Richardson
